Breaking The Cycle Of Empty Ambition |
Ambition: itβs the fuel that powers success. But what if it isnβt leading us to happiness? What if itβs trapping us in a cycle of constant striving and an ever-elusive sense of satisfaction?
Keren Eldad, author of "Gilded: Breaking Free from the Cage of Ambition, Perfectionism and the Constant Pursuit of More," knows this situation all too well. She used to be a strung-out overachiever, trapped in what she calls a "gilded cage." That is until she decided to make some major changes to break the cycle.
For those trapped in their own "gilded cages," Eldad, who recently joined the HerMoney Podcast, says the first step to breaking free is recognizing the difference between healthy and empty ambition. "Healthy ambition is wonderfulβ¦It feels great, it's fulfilling, it's purpose-driven and it really has you waking up eager for the day and inspired on a regular basis," she says. "Unhealthy ambition is punishing, it's painful, it's never enough, and it's very hard to sustain."
Once youβve IDβd your unhealthy ambition issue, one of the next steps is building habits that help you break free and prevent you from falling back into harmful old patterns. Listen to Eldadβs advice for breaking the cycle, here. |

This Week In Your Wallet |

Sawdust today, success tomorrow. As The Wall Street Journal reports, school districts across the country are spending tens of millions of dollars on shop classes where students can learn hands-on trades, like welding and woodworking. The endgame? Prep students for blue collar careers where they can make six-figures relatively quickly. "Thereβs a paradigm shift happening," said Jake Mihm, an education consultant in the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. "Theyβre high-skill, high-wage jobs that are attractive to people because theyβre hands-on, and heads-on." A recent analysis shows that the share of workers aged 20 to 24 in blue-collar jobs was 18% last May. Thatβs two points higher than it was at the start of 2019.
ICYMI, President Trumpβs tariffs on Canada, China and Mexico went into effect this week. It will take a while to feel the ripple effects, but one thingβs for sure, higher prices are likely coming for everything from food to toys. "Just how high prices will get β and when β all depend on the extent to which businesses will absorb the higher cost of tariffs or reconfigure their supply chains to minimize costs, as well as how much inventory they have on hand," CNN reports. One area where you might see price hikes soon: Produce. As Targetβs CEO told CNBC, much of their winter produce comes from Mexico and consumers could see higher prices within a few days. The newly implemented tariffs also rattled investor confidence, with stocks slumping early in the week. They bounced back Wednesday, after the administration announced a one-month pause on auto tariffs.

Attention, procrastinators. You have just over a month to file your taxes. HerMoney has rounded up 5 ways to make the process as stress-free as possible. One of the big ones? If youβre filing with help from a professional, use a checklist to ensure you submit everything they need. "This will minimize the back-and-forth between you and your accountant and keep everything organized on your end," writes Sara Gelsheimer. "While it might seem like an optional step, this list can give more structure to the tax-filing process, which should result in a less stressful experience β both for you and your CPA." It can save you money, too. Many CPAs charge by the hour, so the less back-and-forth, the lower the invoice for tax prep. |

I'm a full-time communications specialist who does freelance writing and editing on the side. I'm really struggling and need more work. Do you have any ideas for at-home work? |
A: |
A recent survey shows more than one in three Americans have side hustles. And, for those who do, they make an average of $891 per month in extra income. It sounds as if youβve already dipped your toe into the side hustling waters and the good news is, theyβre pretty deep, with plenty of opportunity out there if you know where to look.
HerMoney recently rounded up 8 work-from-home side hustles you can do remotely, around your schedule. The list includes roles like social media manager, tutor, and virtual assistant. You can check out the ideas, here.
If youβre willing to explore non-remote side-hustles, here are a handful of options. One that Iβm partial to? Becoming a mobile notary. Once you become licensed (the requirements for that vary by state), you can meet people to offer notary services at times that work with your schedule. As the National Notary Association notes, 43% of all part-time, self-employed notaries earn more than $500 a month, and nearly 30% earn more than $1,000 a month.
There are lots of other places to look online for part-time remote jobs. Some of the more popular resources include Upwork, where you can browse freelance opportunities and Flexjobs, which specializes in remote positions. Mother Untilted also has a good listing of flexible roles. Good luck! |
