| Brooke Shields Might Want To Hire You |
|
|
| Audiences first met Brooke Shields as a teen model and actress, who was declared by TIME magazine the "Face of the β80s." Fast forward to today and sheβs taken on a new role β founder and CEO. |
|
|
Shields recently joined How She Does It to talk about launching Commence in 2024. The hair care line was built specifically for women over 40, a group she says the beauty industry has long ignored.
"All the women I know who are over 50 are fabulous, and weβre all embarking on new things," Shields says. "Theyβre not represented by the beauty industry. Theyβre not marketed to. Theyβre overlooked."
She spent years working with researchers to develop six products with proprietary formulas β and got a serious crash course in entrepreneurship along the way. One thing she noticed? Female investors showed up differently than their male counterparts.
"The women venture capitalists that I sat with never [talked down to me]. The way they began a sentence was, βYou know what worked for us? Have you thought about this?β" Shields shares.
And, like any smart founder, Shields knows her strengths β and where she needs backup. "I canβt wait to hire a kickass female CEOβ¦. I canβt wait to have someone who is so much smarter than I am in business." |

Have federal student loans? Youβre going to want to pay attention to this. The SAVE repayment plan, which has had payments on hold for 7 million borrowers for nearly two years while it has faced legal challenges from Republican attorneys general, is ending. Starting July 1, federal loan servicers will send notices with deadlines for when borrowers must choose a new repayment plan. As The New York Times reports, the Trump administration is also rolling out other major changes to the student loan system through its new tax and policy billβ¦so even if youβre not in SAVE, youβll want to get up to speed.
If you got hit with IRS penalties during the pandemic, you could soon have money coming your way. A federal court just ruled that the IRS improperly assessed penalties and interest during the pandemic. If you were impacted, youβll need to file for a refund by July 10th. Note, while the IRS is expected to fight the ruling, as Yahoo Finance reports, the National Taxpayer Advocate β an independent watchdog within the IRS β urges people to act before the deadline anyway. Donβt wait on this one.
Does your success make your partner squirm? Experts say there are five telltale signs β including when they downplay your accomplishments. One fix: loop them in and ask them for their input on what youβre working on. "Get vulnerable and let them in some way, whether emotionally or physically," suggests couples coach Kavita J. Patel. Making your partner feel like theyβre contributing to your success, she adds, can go a long way to strengthening your relationship. |

| Q: |
Weβve heard from a couple of you (hi, Allison and Shannan!) asking some version of: "What books should I read to get smarter about personal finance and investing?" |
| A: |
Thereβs no shortage of books out there to help you up your financial knowledge. Here are some of my top picks: |
|
| β |
"Money and Me: How to Make Your Finances Work Harder for You and Your Family": From the late Wall Street Journal personal finance columnist and Humble Dollar founder Jonathan Clements, this one covers smart savings and investing strategies, good money habits and β bonus β wise advice on the relationships and mindset that make it all stick. |
| β |
"I Will Teach You to be Rich" by Ramit Sethi covers everything from the importance of automating your savings to strategies for spending guilt-free. If youβre looking to build systems that actually work, pick this one up. |
| β |
"How to Retire: 20 Lessons for a Happy, Successful and Wealthy Retirement": This one, from Morningstarβs Christine Benz, features retirement thought leaders each going deep on one lesson they believe matters most. |
| β |
"The Little Book of Common Sense Investing": A classic for good reason. Written by Vanguard founder John Bogle, it makes a clear, compelling case for keeping investing simple. |
| β |
"Smart Women Finish Rich" by my friend David Bach is especially useful for anyone managing family finances. It covers budgeting, investing, planning and more. |
|
| And last but not least, I hope you donβt mind me self-promoting here a bit. I consider my new book, "The Forever Paycheck," to be some of the most important work Iβve ever done. Itβs a roadmap for making your money last as long as you do β without sacrificing joy along the way. You can pre-order it here. |
