How to Invest With Less Worry

Yes, it’s been another volatile few weeks in the markets, and things may not settle down just yet. But history is on our side, thank goodness, and has shown us there will be a rebound coming. And we really wanna be there for it. (And we really want you to be there for it, too!) So this week we’re taking a look at the past, present, and future of investing with Bob Pisani, the Senior Markets Correspondent for CNBC. He joins the HerMoney Podcast* to talk about investing pitfalls and shares some of the most common mistakes he’s seen investors make during his career. Plus, Pisani offers insight on how to invest in a volatile market (without worrying so much) and gives us some best practices for investing for the long haul. Remember, it’s time in the market (not timing the market) that really matters.

Budget-Friendly Ideas for Friendsgiving

What do rustic pumpkins and inexpensive take-out food have in common? Both are perfectly appropriate for a Friendsgiving gathering. Those of us who are eager to host a  Thanksgiving-style celebration with our friends but don’t have much of a budget, take heart — you could also skip the turkey entirely and focus on those delicious side dishes. “I mean, the sides are the best part of Thanksgiving anyhow, aren’t they?” says foodie Christine Pittman, who notes the best thing about a side-dish-dinner is that so many classic Thanksgiving sides are super budget-friendly to make. Check out this muffin-tin-stuffing recipe and this sweet potato casserole for two inexpensive ideas. And if you are planning to roast a turkey, remember you don’t have to get a big one. The best part? Less time in the kitchen means more time socializing with your nearest and dearest. Enjoy!

Don't Drive Blind: Rebalance Ahead of a Recession
Together with

.
And speaking of the market, it’s during times of volatility that we really need to take the wheel, so to speak, to make sure everything is where it needs to be, investment wise. With the stock market down by double digits, inflation soaring and the Fed planning to continue raising interest rates to fight the rising cost of living, many women who have checked their portfolios lately have found they are suddenly too exposed in one area of the market, or perhaps don’t have enough exposure in another.

Financial experts tell us that at age 40, we should have about 70% of our assets in stocks. At age 50, that figure should drop to around half. Despite that, a recent HerMoney and Alliance for Lifetime Income survey showed that one in four women have 20% more allocated to stocks than is recommended. (And 37% of Millennials, 30% of Gen Xers and 21% of Baby Boomers don’t know how their portfolio is allocated!) That means a lot of us are driving blind when it comes to our investments. This is where rebalancing comes in. Take time and realign your investments with your original plan, whether you still have decades to invest or are nearing retirement. It’s particularly important in bear markets and the prospect of a recession looming.
