All The Best Black Friday Deals + Strategies
There was a time in the not-so-distant past when devoted bargain hunters spent days (OK, maybe hours) mapping out their Black Friday spending strategies. These power- shoppers sometimes traded Thanksgiving dinner for a protein bar and a spot in a parking lot all for the chance to score great deals on toys and TVs. Lured by the thrill of deep discounts and limited quantities, they came for the doorbusters, those sought-after retail unicorns that could transform a regular shopping trip into a mythical journey at the local mall.

Black Friday, and its legendary doorbusters, though, have been transformed in recent years from a single-day shopping ritual to a sometimes month-long experience where great deals on certain gifts can last a fortnight online and in stores. This week, HerMoney’s Aly Walansky takes a look at where we can find the best Black Friday deals this year, and tells us which doorbusters are worth the hype and which ones can wait for the clearance aisle. The main thing you need to know for this year? Don’t wait until Thanksgiving to research and purchase your must-haves. Go online and scope out those savings ASAP!

The Best Black Friday Strategies

And while you’re checking out the best deals in advance, it’s also time to get strategic. Much as the big meal on Thanksgiving requires a great deal of advance prep and planning, scoring deep discounts also requires mapping out a strategy and making a smart plan of action, which can include some digital assistance from price-saving apps, extenders and coupons. Thankfully, you can do it all from your favorite device and the comfort of your couch. So, what’s the best game plan? Money-saving expert Andrea Woroch wants us to use sites such as CamelCamelCamel to take a quick but deep dive into the historic data for your most sought-after (and expensive) gifts. That way you’ll know if the advertised special is truly a great deal. And never – ever – hand over your credit card without checking for coupon codes for the items you are purchasing. It’s as easy as running a Google search for the item and the words “coupon code” on your smartphone. For even more convenience “bookmark your favorite deal sites like CouponFollow.com which organizes coupons by store and categories so you can find extra savings quickly,” says Woroch. Other browser tools, such as Cently, will search for coupons and make sure the biggest potential discount is added to your cart. Here’s to working smarter, not harder, on your hunt for the best Black Friday bargains. :)

Why Women Business Leaders Are Good For Companies — And The World

At HerMoney, we love uplifting female entrepreneurs and helping listeners follow in their footsteps. The only problem is that there just aren’t enough of these women out there. When it comes to rising to the top in business — whether that means founding a successful company or breaking into the C-suite — there are still far too many barriers for women. Only 8% of Fortune 500 CEOs are women, and that number goes all the way down to 1% if you’re looking at women of color. Last year, just 2% of venture capital funding went to female founders. But it’s not only women who suffer when we face these barriers. It’s men. It’s corporations. It’s the economy. When women aren’t given a chance, the world loses out on new ideas, better products, and bigger profits. On this week’s HerMoney Podcast* Julia Boorstin, author of the book “When Women Lead” joins us to discuss how female business leaders are good at navigating stressful situations, building collaborative environments, and instilling their companies with a strong sense of purpose. It’s a special conversation, and we’d love to hear what you think.

How To Go – And Save – Green For The Holidays

With the twinkling lights, joyful music and glad gatherings, December can feel like the most wonderful time of the year. But let’s be honest: The holidays haven’t always been so kind to our wallets – not to mention the planet. And it’s long past time for that to change. That’s why this year we’ve got all the environmentally-conscious, budget-savvy tips you need for entertaining, traveling and gift-giving. For example, did you know that artificial trees take far more resources to create and ship, and that their plastic parts can last for centuries in a landfill? Also, this season is a great time to keep a lid on food waste. No one wants to run out of food at their party, but having too much can mean a lot goes in the garbage, which is a lot of hard work and money down the drain. Instead, you can take a look at the Guest-imator calculator from NRDC that helps you plan portion sizes more accurately. We hope you have the most fun — and the greenest! — celebrations this year.

The True Cost of Taking in a Stray

Together with

When you decide to adopt a stray, instead of purchasing a puppy or kitten, you’re giving a sweet animal a second chance at life. And while your pet will quickly become your furriest best friend, you should know it can also be expensive to nurse your new pet back to health. Stray animals have an unknown history of disease and behavioral problems, and may have been neglected and suffered from poor nutrition in their past. Your new pet will also not have details on their vaccination history, which means you’ll need to ensure they have all their shots. All these costs can add up quickly, which is why we wanted to take a look at everything you should know about the true cost of taking in a stray.
