Strong Enough for a Man = More Expensive for a Woman
|
|
|
There’s a new law in California aimed at saving women and teens tens of thousands of dollars on the so-called “pink tax” — the premium we often pay as women for socks, shampoo, lotions and other services. New York has a similar law. It’s a good start, but we still need to be vigilant because there are plenty of loopholes. (Plus, we know it costs more than $300K more to be a woman than a man over our lifetimes.)
This week, HerMoney’s Bev O’Shea checks in with several experts who offer 9 tactical tips on buying what you need without paying an up charge for being female (or smelling like a guy!) Among the suggestions: Turn your back on the blush-colored bottles in front of you and look on the other side of the aisle when shopping for everything from shaving cream to deodorant to body wash. Check out our favorite tips here.
Why a Recession Shouldn’t Hold Back Your Career
Is a recession on the horizon? If you talk to 10 different economists, you’ll get 10 different answers. That uncertainty is part of the reason HerMoney
tackles the tough topics, including how to manage your budget during a downturn, how to invest, and how to stay on track for retirement. And in this week’s HerMoney Podcast* episode, we’re focusing on another important avenue for making sure your goals and your personal economy are recession-proof — your career. How does a recession impact jobs in different industries? What do you do if you’re laid off? And how can you turn a career break into a career opportunity? Lauren McGoodwin, founder and CEO of Career Contessa, joins us to answer these questions and many more. We get real about layoffs, and what to know if you’re job searching during a recession. You got this.
Time Keeps on Slippin’ Into the Future
A new nurse walks into a break room and asks her coworkers how much money she should direct to her 401(k) plan. What happens next, explains HerMoney contributor Erin Wood, is the stuff retirement myths are made of. Long story short, when someone suggested she stash at least 10% away for the future, the healthcare worker scoffed, telling the group she wasn’t giving away that much of her hard-earned money. Ouch. Unfortunately, the nurse isn’t alone in this misconception. Not all of us understand the power of saving for a brighter financial future. This week, we tackle (and bust) five of the most common myths about retirement.
Online Resale: How to Earn More in 2023
There’s something about the start of a New Year that makes us want to clear things out of the house, as visions of Marie Kondo tidying up dance in our heads. HerMoney writer Rena Philips walks us through her annual clutter-clearing journey that often ends with scoring big bucks online for some of the items that no longer bring her joy. After all, one woman’s trash can be another woman’s glorious new treasure. And the online resale market is as hot as ever. (Facebook Marketplace reports 1 billion users per month, and eBay has 1.7 billion
active listings in 2023!) Here are 10 of the best tips for selling items online for the most money this year. Good luck!
Career POV: How to Get What You Want at Work
Major shifts have taken place over the last three years in the workplace. Remote work has been on the rise, yet some employers are calling for a return to the office. It’s tough to keep every employee satisfied, yet crucial that employers understand what workers want (and need) to do their jobs. A recent career survey shows that employees are most concerned about improving their overall wellbeing. We get it. And when it comes to changes employees want, three things stand out: People crave more responsibility, they want to
learn new skills, and they want to muster the courage to ask for a raise. Sound familiar? This week, we chatted with career experts and coaches on how employees can work toward these goals. As the Rolling Stones say, you can’t always get what you want, but try these tips to see if you can get what you need. You got this!
